Alright, the other night while watching the hockey game I saw the following commercial on TV. Normally I don't care what any commercial has to say. I use the commercial breaks to grab something from the kitchen or do some push-ups or something. This one however 'really grinds my gears!' Let's take a quick look so you can understand where I'm coming from:
Reason 1: Chrysler does does a fantastic job here [without even realizing it] of re-enforcing the stereotypical notion that women aren't the best of drivers. The lady backing up the mini van didn't even turn to look over her shoulder to see if there were any approaching cars before backing up. Instead she's relying on the 'security camera' the new vans have. Stupid. THERE WERE KIDS IN THE CAR LADY, THINK OF THE KIDS!!!!! By no means does a rear-view parking camera replace looking over your shoulder and looking with your own eyes to see if it's clear to move a 2 ton vehicle. Furthermore the commercial portrays the camera as the safety feature that saved an accident. No. Taking away her drivers license would prevent an accident. She should not be allowed behind the wheel of a car.
Reason 2: I'm all for in car audio/video entertainment, esp when it means keeping kids occupied and quiet on a long trip. But for goodness sakes, put the dang tv monitors in the back of the seat or headrest in front of you!! Who needs two 20" screen hanging down from the headliner BLOCKING THE VIEW OF THE REAR VIEW MIRROR?!?! Again, in car dvd systems are great, just don't put them in the way of the drivers vision. With all the car companies trying to get the best safety ratings it's amazing how things like this slip through the cracks. Common sense is not so common.
Reason 3: This is probably the most personal reason for me. At the very end of the commercial you hear the narrator say "come see what we're building for you." Upon hearing that line the other night while watching TV, I immediately shouted back "NOTHING RIGHT NOW!" And that's the truth. Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep aren't building a single car right now. Which if you can put 2 and 2 together, means 'The Colonel' is being delayed. Every single plant has been temporarily shut down due to the bankruptcy issues, while the whole Fiat merger works its way out. The consumer isn't stupid Chrysler. I know full well you aren't building a single thing right now. Don't lie. It's not a good business ethic.
Okay, that's my rant for this week. Moral of the rant? Well, IF you could take one from it, it'd be to think clearly for yourself, and don't believe that everything in commercials are true. But you probably already knew that.
