Pin Dodge 2K11: After

The 9th annual Pin Dodge tournament took place this past weekend, and with much success! No injuries, and for the most part, everyone was on time, and on point with keeping the games moving along. We broke the regular season into a 'double round robin' format, that totaled 42 games played. Then we had a double elimination tournament for the playoffs.

Unfortunately my run at a 4th consecutive championship fell just short this year, as my team finished 4th out of 7. However, the championship did remain in the family, as my brothers team completely ran the field this year without losing a single game. We had excellent weather with not terribly hot temperatures and low humidity with a few passing clouds to give us a break from the sun. All in all, it was a great day, and provided everyone a chance to catch up and see friends who don't live in the area anymore. Next year will be our 10th anniversary of playing, so we'll definitely have to do something big! In the meantime, enjoy these pictures that both Katie, and myself took!

7 teams, prepared for battle.

Pin Dodge!

And the chaos begins.

Exchanging throws.

 Bright colors.

Sometimes it's fun to aim for people, and not the pins.

Here I am hoping that ball doesn't hit a pin.

A victim from 2, 3, maybe 4 years ago? Still laying dead in the woods.

My bro, 2011 Champion, and part time model.

The gang one more time.

GPS Softball

Last night was the second week of the season for our men's spring softball team. And while chatting with a few of the guys during last weeks games, somehow the topic of GPS running watches came up, and I mentioned how I had one of the Garmin one's. I said I thought it would be funny to wear it during a game to see what it looked like....so that's exactly what I did. I brought the watch to last night's games and put it on for just the first game. I paused the timer when I was just sitting in the dugout waiting to bat, then started it when going up to bat and when out in the field. [Can you guess which positions I play?] Here's the usual quick glance at the summary. Although I highly recommend clicking on 'view details' on this one to expand the view on Garmin's site. Also, click on 'aerial' view so you can actually see the field.

Unfortunately for me, I played awful last night [at least while batting] so the majority of the lines are either my playing in the outfield chasing fly balls, or running from home to first base, and then back to the dugout. If you expand onto the full Garmin site, and then click on on 'player' in the upper right hand area, you can then hit the 'play' button and see an animated tracking icon follow all the lines as the game progresses. At any rate, I thought it would just be interesting to see what it would look like, and see how well the watch works in other situations rather than just running. Also, I hit a top speed of 15mph running to first base. I know I can run faster when not running through dirt in cleats though, so I may have to clock myself using the watch since every time I try and run past a temporary radar clocking station it never seems to pick me up.

......I wonder what else I could use it for? Suggestions?!

Swimming, It Should Be Fun

Yesterday afternoon I headed straight to the pool from work to get in a good solid swim workout, since the weather outside was a bit nasty. It wasn't a crazy workout by any means, since I'm still not in that great of swimming shape. I did 4,500 yards [roughly 2.5 miles] in an hour and 20 minutes or so, and dropped the interval on one of my sets by 5 seconds. It was a pretty good workout, and it gave my legs a chance to rest up in preparation for next week's trip to Colorado!

When I hopped in the pool though, there was this young asian kid [12-13 maybe?] swimming in the next lane, with who I could only assume was his dad crouching down at the end of the lane on the pool deck with a stopwatch in hand. I couldn't really understand what the dad was screaming half the time because it was either very broken english or another language all together....that and pools tend to echo a lot.

Now, to this kids credit, he was swimming his ass off. He was just doing 50 yard sprints of breaststroke over and over again, but each time he came to the wall completely out of breath, his dad would berate and scream at him for something. His dad eventually threw a kick board at this kids head as he came into the wall and told him to start kicking instead, but if he ever slows down he'd be in trouble [at least that's what I think he was saying.] By this time I'm about half way through my set of 10 100's on 1:20, so I'm getting a little winded, but I'm still moving relatively quick, and I was barely moving faster than this kid, and he was just kicking. Now, I'm out of shape, and he appeared to be very in shape, but still, he was moving.

He kicked his heart out for maybe the next 5-10 minutes straight [which is a long time to be kicking that hard] and eventually his dad got really fed up, and barked something along the lines of 'Are you slowing down?!' and the kid had to sadly reply 'Yea' as he was in a lot of anguish. The dad then threw a water bottle at him and told him to get out, they were done for the day. Yea.

Now, anyone who knew me while I was swimming in college knows that I am all for maximum effort and hard work. If you want results, you gotta train hard. But there comes a point where you can just take it too far. I do believe this dad was well beyond that point. No one should ever be forced to do or compete in something if it's no longer fun. Yea, practice can suck sometimes, but you want to be there for the betterment of your individual or team progress. I can tell you with certainty that this kid was not having fun being barked at with kick boards and water bottles being thrown at him. It's probably quite a shame too, because this kid was fast, and with the right coaching he'd probably do pretty well for himself, but if his dad has any part of his swimming future I'd be surprised to see him swim past high school.

After almost 17 years of swimming, including 4 in the NCAA ranks, I can say with the utmost confidence that I loved the sport just as much at the end as I did back when I was barely more than a toddler. I believe there's something to be said about that. All too often you hear of kids just getting burned out and quitting because they lost their love for something that was once so much fun. It's sad.

Yesterday evening my friend shared this video, and all I could think about was how opposite this was to what I witnessed in the pool earlier in the afternoon.

This is fun, this is what swimming should be. Ryan Lochte just got bumped up a few notches in my book, although I don't think he'll ever top Jason Lezak.  <--- [DO NOT click that link if you don't want your heart rate to rise or your palms to get sweaty.]

A Glorious Weekend Recap

This past weekend was both uneventful, and yet, extremely eventful. Saturday's weather was nothing short of dreary, being cold, dark, and rainy all day long. I got up early and went for a swim so I could feel better about myself for spending the rest of the day on the couch watching movies. I haven't done that in a long time, so it was actually kind of nice. I cranked out 4500 yards of swimming in the morning which works out to about 2.5 miles:

Now that some more of the snow has melted, I should be able to start hitting the trails again on foot and on bike, but on Saturday it was swimming. And that was about it for Saturday, nice relaxing day, excellent.

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Sunday was a totally different beast. In the early afternoon hours, I headed to the Washington Auto Show with my good friend Ben to check out all the new cars, SUV's, and trucks. I go every year and have enjoyed seeing cars that were once concepts and off limits to explore, now open and a part of a manufacturers full time line up. Also, I get a little kick out of jumping up and down in the back of all the pick up trucks to test out their suspension....but that's just me. I'm a huge fan of the newly redesigned Jeep Grand Cherokee, and really enjoyed sitting in it and exploring it, and seeing if the interior really is that much superior to the model it replaced. It is. A friend of mine was nice enough to hook us up with some free tickets, which made the show that much better. We walked around for close 4 hours, and then headed outside and a block away to the Old Dominion Brewhouse. Why you ask? Because....

SUPER BOWL PARTAYYY!!! Every year the local rock station, DC101, throws a super bowl bash for its listeners. The party is free, but you have to win tickets to get in. After 2 weeks of failing to get through on the phone to win tickets, I heard one of the members of the station's morning show was going to be at a nearby Best Buy store giving away tickets, so that morning I drove over and was able to score some for my friends and I. Ben and I got to the bar shortly after the doors opened at 4:00, and that couldn't have been too soon. Within 15 minutes of getting in, pretty much all the tables were spoken for, but luckily we were able to grab one while we waited for another 2 friends to show up.

The party.

Not much to say about the game itself, other than I'm glad that the Steelers lost, and I'm glad that Aaron Rodgers got himself a super bowl win, esp after all he had to go through with Brett Favre being such a dork up in Green Bay.

Not so happy. Ha.

But that was only half of the glory for the anti-pittsburgh fans out there! The Caps also handed out a solid beat down of the Penguins next door at the Verizon Center earlier in the afternoon. Like I said, for the anti-pitt fans, yesterday was GLORIOUS! [I'm not really that angry, I promise!] I wish the day after the super bowl was a holiday though, or that my weekend days were flipped around, cause I need another day to recover from yesterday. All in all though, a fantastic weekend! And there you have it, a glorious weekend recap. Enjoy!

I HATE YOU BRETT FAVRE

Well, thanks to the heroic egotistical efforts of the NFL's biggest butt turd, my fantasy football team will not be competing for the championship this year, I'll be playing for 3rd place instead. Here's the scenario, about 5 or 6 weeks ago I was tied for last in the league, things just weren't going my way, 1 point losses and such. Then I start winning and climbing my way back into things, then two weeks ago I won again to secure the final playoff spot, then I make it through the first round of playoffs to lead up to this week.

I had a solid lineup, but then something interesting happened, Brett Favre was listed as out for tonights game, and the back up, Joe Webb was listed to start at QB. But in Yahoo leagues, he's eligible as a WR as well, so I grabbed him off the waivers yesterday morning not during church, and started him in place of WR Sidney Rice. All was well until this afternoon, when all of a sudden Brett Favre decides he wants to try and start, so he gets moved to Questionable, then he warms up and gets moved to starter. Now I have to sit Joe Webb and put Sidney Rice back in.

The game rolls around, and what happens? That beat up, old, selfish, gray haired douche Brett Favre gets himself knocked out of the game, [re]enter, Joe Webb. Sidney Rice does absolutely nothing for me, and the points that Webb scored during the game would've sent me into the Championship.

I HATE YOU BRETT FAVRE. Just go away and start selling your special footballs already. I HATE YOU!

So I lose the game by about 3 points [story of my season really], and this guy advances to the championship:

I guess that's what I get for making fantasy football moves during church.....

Pin Dodge 2010

This past weekend marked the 8th annual Pin Dodge tournament that my friends and I organize and play in every year. It started a while back after we were goofing around in my friends back yard and we 'resurrected' an old elementary school game where you throw dodge balls at the bowling pins that the opposing team is trying to block. It's a pretty simple game, but oodles of fun!

So on Saturday we had 6 teams of 4 people battle it out for this years Pin Dodge Championship title. The weather was extremely hot, the sun was brutal, and everyone [well, most everyone] gave everything they had to try and bring home the trophy. Well as luck skill would have it, yours truly won again! I brought home my 3rd trophy in a row, and 4th overall Pin Dodge championship title!!

Our team was solid this year. We started out pretty strong, but quickly fell into a slump and couldn't knock a pin down over to save our lives and fell drastically in the regular season rankings. We revised our game plan, made some position changes, worked on our communication and battled back into the number 2 overall seed going into the the tournament. That was huge because it gave us a first round bye. In the end we were able to prevail and bring home the glory. It was the 3rd overall [and 2nd in a row] trophy for my friend and teammate Shawn [we were on the same team last year together as well], and a special victory for my friend Ben. Ben is one of the few people other than myself who have played Pin Dodge every single year. This was however, his first victory, so I'm glad he was able to finally get a trophy. Shawn's wife Ginny was also on our team, so I suppose it was good we won so their household remains happy as well.

This year we also had someone of actual note battling for the championship. Reed Doughty, starting safety for the Washington Redskins played alongside my sister in law, Katie, on the green team. Obviously Reed is a better athlete than anyone who played, achieving far more in his respected sport than any of us could hope for. But it was his rookie year as a Pin Dodge player, and it was evident that the veteran players certainly held an advantage over him! My team actually played them in the championship game, and although I'm a huge Redskins fan, I was happy to see him lose this one. Reed is a great guy and we all thank him very much for coming out and playing this year.

Here's a couple pictures from after the tournament, look for a video in the coming weeks. [I mean that this time!!] Enjoy!

Underwater Base Jumping

Huh? Underwater Base Jumping? Yep, you read correctly. A long while back I did a post on base jumping with wing suits. But this new video might be even more impressive. I don't know a whole lot about free diving, other than it takes a tremendous amount of practice, skill, and lung capacity, so I'll just let the video do the talking. You know what's funny though? Chances are probably better you could get my mom to do the wing suit thing before this! Enjoy!

2010 Tour de Cure - Diabetes Awareness & Fundraiser

Last June I [kind of] participated in the American Diabetes Tour de Cure. I say kind of, becuase I didn't actually ride in it. Instead I volunteered and was a motorcycle marshall patrolling the course making sure all the riders were safe at all street crossings and checkpoints. I had a lot of fun, but felt like I could've done more.

So this year, I've signed up to be IN the tour. I've joined a team with some of the fine folks over at DCSBN called 'Team BamBam." Greg 'Bam Bam' walker, was a good friend of some of my friends, who lost his battle with diabetes on September 11, 2009. One of my good friends from that site has a brother who currently has diabetes, and in honor of Greg and all those currently fighting, my friend and his wife started the team.

I've been blessed with good health my entire life [despite all the crazy stuff I do] and it's something most people tend to take for granted and not really think about until it affects them personally. But that most certainly doesn't mean those of us not fighting a disease can't join the cause and fight for a cure. So on June 20th I'll be riding the 33 mile course with the rest of Team BamBam to help raise funds for the American Diabetes Association.

I've already sent out a big email blast to a lot of friends and family, but for those of you who weren't on that list, and also happen to be reading this right now, please consider chipping in whatever you can to help! Below are two links, one to our team page where you can read a little more about Greg, and one link will take you directly to my personal page. Thanks very much in advance to anyone who is able to contribute!

Oh, and I almost forgot, we're getting custom bike jersey's made [which I designed] as well, which you can see right here:

Blue Mountain Snow Cross!

I survived! In the previous post, I talked about heading up to PA to try the dual slalom racing on snow, and I'm happy to report that I made it up there without issue, had a blast riding my bike down a black diamond run on the snow like a maniac, and made it home all in one piece!

There were just over 40 people who showed up to race. We all got one practice run, then the racing started. We went down in heats of 4 racers, with the top 2 finishers in each heat advancing to the next round. Somehow I managed to actually advance through the first AND the second rounds...but didn't make it past the third round. I was pretty happy with that though, since I wasn't even expecting to advance past the first. There were some really fast guys out there, and it was obvious they race this kinda thing all the time. So for not having the race being broken up into different ability classes (beginner, sport, expert) I was very satisfied with how I did.

Here's some pictures my friend Andrea took of me, the course, and some racing action. And I got some pretty decent footage from the camera I had mounted to my handlebars, so I edited together my three race runs so you could get a better idea of the course and how fast we were going! Enjoy!

Motorsport in Slo-Mo

I just found these videos of some amazing racing footage in slow motion. From grassroots and vintage racing, to the super high tech machines we know today, it's all motor-sport, and it's all beautiful.....just a little more so when it's in super slow motion. Enjoy.

Flag Football Champs.....Again

I forgot to post this a couple weeks ago, but forgot. My indoor flag football team were season champs again. I think that makes like 6 'seasons' we've won so far. These picture are hilarious for a number a reasons.

1. We look like a bunch of misfits
2. There are about 8 different facial expressions going on
3. It appears as though we're looking at 15 different cameras
4. Dan is drinking his celebratory beer that he brought with him

Ladies & Gentlemen, I proudly present to you, The Outlaws

Sesame Street > WNBA

Stewie makes a good point, no one respects the WNBA.

I heard about this story yesterday and simply had to laugh. Sorry, but it's funny. Apparently The Dream WNBA team was set to play their first playoff game at home, only problem was that Sesame Street Live had already scheduled the arena, so the WNBA team got bumped and have to play their home game elsewhere. This brought up an earlier story about how the WWE was supposed to perform in Denver [I think] but the NBA kicked them out so the Nuggets' regular game could take place. I'm gonna have to agree with the decisions here. Sesame Street Live will sell wayyyy more tickets than a WNBA game, and from the arena's perspective, it's def the right call. Too funny. You can read more about it here.

American Swimming > European Swimming

Silly silly Europeans. You would have thought that after the Olympics last year when France's Alain Bernard stuck his foot in his mouth that that would've been a lesson to the rest of the world. Do not, under any circumstances trash talk before a race against Team USA.

The big story at this past weeks World Swimming Championships in Rome was the much awaited rematch in the 100m Butterfly between Michael Phelps and Milorad Cavic. For those that don't recall, Phelps beat Cavic last year in Beijing by the smallest possible margin of .01 seconds to take gold in the 100 fly. Cavic to this day still thinks he won, depsite the timing systems and high def photos saying otherwise. But enough about that, back to the story at hand.

Cavic was still so distraught about losing last year that he started trash talking about this years race a few days prior to the showdown. He taunted Phelps saying that Phelps could race in whichever swimsuit he wanted, but would be naive in sticking with his Speedo LZR. Cavic even offered to buy Phelps one of the new suits (which are still questionable about legality) to race in, to make it a fair race. Phelps wanted nothing to do with Cavic, and was wise in doing so. He lets his swimming do the talking, and I love it. So what happened this year?

Phelps in his 'slower' and 'inferior' swim suit beat Cavic again, for the second time, again, for the second year in a row.....again. Leading up to the race I was hoping Phelps was going to have an extra Speedo LZR suit in his gear bin, and would've handed it to Cavic after the race as if to say "its not about the suit, I'm just better", but he didn't.......although that would've been awesome. Instead he hopped up on Cavic's lane line after the race and proudly showed off his team USA Speedo. They briefly shook hands and Cavic tried to say something, but Phelps wanted nothing of it (as you can see in the video below) and enjoyed the moment of another world record broken, and another pesky euro squashed. HOW'S THAT SLICE OF HUMBLE PIE TASTE CAVIC?!?!? Check out the awesomeness below:

Swimming + 3 Year Break + Me = FAIL

Good Lord Almighty.

The back story; A few weeks ago my brother told me about an upcoming triathlon in the area and that he wanted to sign up for it. I thought to myself 'hey this could be fun' and I've been wanting to get into triathlons for a while now. What better time than now to start I asked myself. The upcoming tri is only a sprint tri, so it's going to be a 400m swim, 12 mile bike ride, and 3 mile run.

Well I run pretty regularly, and anyone can pedal a bike around. But swimming, swimming is the tough part (for most.) I was always told that if you were a swimmer you had such an advantage over the competition.

Anyways, so since the tri is just over a week away I figured it might be a good idea to go swimming, after all, I havent been in a pool (to swim laps) in over 3 years. Now normally I'd stretch it out a bit, jump in and warm up doing a few 400's nice and easy to find my stroke and let my arms stretch out in the water. Unfortunately I wont have that luxury on the day of the tri. So yesterday, my brilliant idea was to stretch it out a bit on the deck, then dive in and go right into a straight 400 for time, to see how my body would react and to see how it would feel.

1) My body definitely reacted, and not in a favorable way. I definitely took it out a little too fast and was about dead by the 100 mark. I gasped for air and I desperately tried to lift my 30lb. arms out of the water for the remaining, and painful 300 yards.

2) I did get my time, and it was much faster that I anticipated or thought I could do. Which I guess is a good thing, and a sign that I haven't lost my stroke or form....I'm just out of swimming shape....by a lot. I clocked in at a blistery 5min 10seconds. Which is kinda funny becuase when registering for the triathlon, they require you to submit your projected swim time, and I believe I put down like a 6:10 or 6:15, something in that range. Now granted, the tri is going to be long course, not short, and also meters, not yards. So based on my time yesterday, I think I can clock in a 5:30 or so come race day. Maybe a little faster with adrenaline pumping. Either way, that's a solid 45 seconds faster than I said I could do. Whoops.

After my inital 400 swim, I had a hard time lifting my arms above my head, not so much cause they were tired, but because I hadn't used certain muscles in such a long time. I needed to stretch it out, badly. I took a few minutes to catch my breath stretch, and then pushed off again. My lungs suprisingly weren't as bad as I thought they'd be. With each flip turn I had no problems getting in some real solid kicks off the wall and breaking out a good two strokes past the flags, another good sign.

In conclusion, the triathlon next weekend should be interesting. I've been told I have a sliiiightly competitive nature, so we'll see if I just take off like a bandit, bonk, and die half way through the bike, or if I'll complete the whole thing in a decent time. As for the swimming part, don't expect me to look like this anytime soon.....

[You can see me diving in at the 1:25 mark]

Almost forgot; When I got home, all those smells and feelings [both physical and emotional] came rushing on back. I wreaked of chlorine, my skin was dry, my hair was all straw-like, my stomach was screaming at me that it was hungry [until I devoured everything in the kitchen], I savored it all. It took a while for me to get to this point, but boy do I miss swimming and everything that goes along with it.

UNC: National Champs

As we all know by now. The UNC Tarheels are the 2009 Mens NCAA Basketball Champions. My sister happens to go to UNC [and thus why I've become such a fan] and she also happens to be crazier than I had previously thought. She was part of this madness last night!! Go Erika.

Franklin Street: The Celebration from The Daily Tar Heel on Vimeo.

On another note, I'm still so incredibly bitter over losing the bracket run by my brother on a tiebreaker in the national championship game by 1 lousy point!! How many bball games have we watched over the past 3 weeks and I lose by 1 point?! Lesson of this story: when filling out your brackets, do not take lightly the importance of the tiebreaker score prediction.

NCAA Championships

LET'S GO HEELS!!!!

Also, for your bracket updates [that are coming down to the wire] head here.

[10:00pm] 38-18 UNC. So far I like what I'm seeing. My only concern is the big guys getting into foul trouble. If Michigan state makes a run, they won't be able to play as aggressive.

[End of 1st] The crowd is definitely trying to give the spartans a lift here. It looked like a run might happen, but UNC is holding their ground. Excellent work. Now let's just work on keeping this combined score of the game under 160. Also, congrats to the Heels on a new NCAA record for most points scored in the first half of a championship game.

[14:59 left in 2nd] Ty Lawson breaks record for number of steals in a title game. Congrats Ty.

[14:38 left in 2nd] Is it me or does this game not look nearly as bad as I thought it would for being played on a football field??

[14:06 left in 2nd] Ben is falling asleep on my couch. He says he's giving Michigan State 5 minutes to make it interesting or he's going home.

[11:02pm] New e*trade baby commercial.

[11:08pm] Ben is asleep.

[7:33 left in 2nd] 72-55 UNC. At this point, I just want the final combined score to stay under 160. Cause then I'll have gone 4/4 in my brackets this year!!

[4:57 left in 2nd] Small run from Michigan State. I'm sure my sisters hands are getting quite sweaty!

[3:51 left in 2nd] 80-65 UNC. I'm not so sure it's gonna stay under 160 :(

[3 seconds left] SON OF A BITCH! YOU COULDN'T JUST HOLD THE BALL?!?! NOW I LOSE THIS BRACKET!!! 1 FREAKING POINT!!!! AHHHHHHHHH.

[End of Regulation] Congrats UNC!!! My sister is going crazy along with the rest of Chapel Hill. Have fun running the streets Erika!

Great Prank

I found a link to this video on Deadspin earlier today, and had a good laugh watching it. This was a well thought out, good natured, mostly harmless prank....one that I certainly wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of! Funny video though. Enjoy.

Outlaws: Flag Football Champs!

I play in an indoor flag football league with some friends. Last night was the Championships. If we won our first game at 9:00, we play in the championship at 11:00. I was a little late to the first game but joined them shortly after the half. We were down, I jumped in playing cornerback, and our D stepped it up. We didn't allow another point. We came back, and ended up winning in overtime.

Second game was a close game. Pretty evenly matched as well. With about 2:30 left to go, the opposing team had a 4th and goal just outside the endzone. I was playing my cover zone far to the right. Their QB just lobbed one right up into the middle of the endzone hoping one of his guys would come down with it. Fortunately for us, one of our guys can jump like 24 feet into the air, and he got up higher. Only he didn't come down with it. He saw me standing by myself in my zone, cause the guy I was covering just ran into the middle, like an 8 year old playing 'bunch ball' soccer. My teammate batted the ball in my direction, and I grabbed it and was off to the races. I had a good angle on the first guy and got around him. Streaking down the sideline it was a sure 'pick & 6' for us. Except it didnt happen.

Out of nowhere, one of their other players completely blindsides me, running full speed, and shoves me into the wall, hard. Now if this were actual football on an outdoor field and in pads, I would've had no problem with what he did, good play, he got me out of bounds. But we're playing flag football. The flags start at your waist and go down towards the knees. He full on shoved me in the shoulder area and I went flying into the hockey bench-styled boards. It hurt, a lot. I immediately felt my back tighten up. Next thing I know, one of my other teammates comes flying in towards this guy. That's it. Other team's benches clears, our clears. I don't know how, but somehow not a single punch was thrown and the ensuing brawl never happens. I'm still on the ground, and pissed.

It was a total dirty, cheap shot, by a thug player who got mad that he got beat on the play. I've got about 1200mg of Motrin in my system right now, trying to keep my back in check. But I'm sore. The other team didn't even shake our hands after the game. Chumps. Those are the kind of people who gives sports a bad name.

Anyway, the Outlaws are your indoor flag football champions (for the second time out of three seasons) and with a perfect record this time around. Here's the boys and the winning team:

Me and Larry, the dude who batted the interception towards me.
